An Australian's Coronavirus Commentary - Government Officials Are Behind the Curve and Not Restricting International Travel Is Foolish

Excerpt:
The have-cake eat-cake experts. When will the media pin them down?
Meanwhile last night the experts were still saying there was no evidence of community transmission in Australia and simultaneously that there was no need to stop the flights to Italy or South Korea. Go figure. If there is no community transmission, it’s not too late to stop the flights. If there is community transmission– then stop telling people not to wear masks, keep shaking hands, going to parties and the football. It can’t be both ways.

When community transmission is obvious and undeniable they’ll say “we expected this”.

Don’t let them get away with their double-speak.

Scott Morrison is choosing to let the virus fly in, can someone tell him these are not the deaths we have to have?
Scott Morrison almost got a hard question on the ABC last night. But he weaseled out of it – just following the expert advice, he said. No, dear leader. Do your own research. Ask some different experts. Ask some different questions. People’s live depend on you. Please send him the message (and tell Boris, Jacinta, Justin, and DJT too).

Given the gravity, we should call a halt to all flights without a two week quarantine (not pretend quarantine loopholes through Dubai, Thailand and Bali). Do it just for a few weeks til we get more data. Winter is coming downunder. The best way to avoid this virus is to minimize trips, shopping and crowds. Start thinking about the long run.

Amazing: LA Times finds a WHO expert who makes sense:
Mike Ryan, who runs the agency’s [WHO] emergencies program, pushed back against officials who wanted to “wave the white flag” and surrender to the disease’s hold. China took drastic steps to fight the virus, he said, and case numbers are now on the decline there.

Countries such as China and South Korea “implemented very, very strong measures that have affected their own economies and their own societies,” Ryan said. “It’s really a duty of others to use the time that has been bought. “That is not a reverse you can achieve with influenza. If that is a failure, we’ll have slowed down the virus.”

There can be a big benefit in slowing the virus’ arrival in a country for a few months, Ryan said. Many countries, including the U.S, are in the middle of flu season, so large numbers of coronavirus cases would overwhelm the health system.

I think the danger is overblown by the media. Probably to blame something on Trump and point the election to the dems.

Well, there was some justification for quarantine, and keeping people from infected areas out of this country. But I don't see any need to panic.

This was also my immediate conclusion. Look at what is driving it. A media induced panicdemic. The timing is most suspect. The minute Mueller went down in flames, along came an impeachment scam based on one phone call, the minute impeachment went down in flames, oh, look, a media driven panicdemic to easily pop the over bubbled economy and further empower agencies at all "levels". Couple that with all the machinations behind getting a long establishment deep stater, despite the fact he his constantly exhibiting cognitive short circuits, as a highly improbable candidate. Hillary as VP, and then the 25th Amendment on Joe?

    And remember Plan D:
    Plan A: Russian collusion
    Plan B: Impeachment
    Plan C: A Panicdemic
Plan D: Fill in the blank, hint we have seen it before.

Absolutely correct. The longer I live the more I think I am hurt by government rather than helped. I think the whole scare over the relatively insignificant corona thing is an attempt to destroy the economy prior to the election in November so that the democrats can take over the power reins. Compared to regular flu, this corona thing is a nothing burger.

This virus and intersectionality on a planet of 7.5 billion people are like tinder and lit matches in a dry forest during the windy season.

Incompetent .... or people in government are evil power addicts. I think it is the latter. It is an incurable affliction. That is why it is essential that government power be severely limited and constitutions never have open ended powers like the "commerce clause" and "necessary and proper clause."

I am thinking that governments are just plain incompetent to deal with things like this. Individuals are the ones with a real stake in things, and they should figure out what to do given the actual data and science.

The CDC predicts that at least 12,000 Americans will die from the flu in any given year. As many as 61,000 people died in the 2017-2018 flu season, and 45 million were infected.Feb 7, 2020

Imo it’s Fear porn. It is more dangerous to drive to work everyday than to be panicking about this. This should be about common sense , 3-4 new virus discovered per year.
There are 219 virus species that are known to be able to infect humans. The first of these to be discovered was yellow fever virus in 1901, and three to four new species are still being found every year.

The most dangerous virus is the Marburg virus. It is named after a small and idyllic town on the river Lahn - but that has nothing to do with the disease itself. The Marburg virus is a hemorrhagic fever virus. As with Ebola, the Marburg virus causes convulsions and bleeding of mucous membranes, skin and organs.

Humans have been battling viruses since before our species had even evolved into its modern form. For some viral diseases, vaccines and antiviral drugs have allowed us to keep infections from spreading widely, and have helped sick people recover. For one disease — smallpox — we've been able to eradicate it, ridding the world of new cases.

But we're a long way from winning the fight against viruses. In recent decades, several viruses have jumped from animals to humans and triggered sizable outbreaks, claiming thousands of lives. The viral strain that drove the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa kills up to 90% of the people it infects, making it the most lethal member of the Ebola family.

But there are other viruses out there that are equally deadly, and some that are even deadlier. Some viruses, including the novel coronavirus currently driving outbreaks around the globe, have lower fatality rates, but still pose a serious threat to public health as we don't yet have the means to combat them.

Here are the 12 worst killers, based on the likelihood that a person will die if they are infected with one of them, the sheer numbers of people they have killed, and whether they represent a growing threat.
