I really like the quotes you've chosen. the dollar sign is important to display, too, so I like that as well. my suggestion for another version of a possible shrug card is very simple:

front : who is john Galt?
back : website for the movie or link directly to the gulch

I am really, really hoping this last movie is marketed using the "who is John Galt?" phrase everywhere. if you use it on a version of your cards, you could parallel the efforts of marketing the movie as well.

thank you for your hard work and dedication. you're the best!

Great idea.... trying to make people think... don't want them to think it's an ad.. I want them to say ... hmmm what's this about...and look further.

This reminded of an advertising strategy many movies use, which is to take out ads for products that only exist in the film. Lately, it's the Hunger Games: http://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/things...
So AS is about businessmen... and they would presumably have business cards, right? Maybe there is some way we could work that in... all cards would reference the movie website of course.

that is AWESOME. the hunger games really captivated me, and to see this type of marketing campaign makes me so happy. i love out-of-the box approaches. it is very easy to ignore commercials today.

for AS, I liked the kickstarter campaign because the campaign in itself was a marketing tool to begin the process. it got people from every direction talking about it -- which was the point (at least, to me. the fact that it was fully funded was the icing on the cake). it was an effort by everyone who donated and/or simply talked (or ranted, in many of those anti-AS articles) about it that perked people's ears. participation by AS fans in marketing this film i think would strengthen the overall campaign -- which is why your idea about business cards is something I like. they actually can be mini advertisements. they're cheap to make and very easy to distribute. the best part is that they have a chance of being personal, since a person handing out the card has a chance to talk to the recipient and ask them to see the past movies, go see the third, and read the novel.

a big thing in the gulch store that i've seen is the "atlas shrugged: now non-fiction" merchandize. that's really good. the twitter accounts of Rearden, Taggart, and D'Anconia responding to some tweets are an effort to blur the lines between the novel and our world today. if the AS team could continue that trend in other aspects, i think it could have an impact. johnrobert2 brought up weeks ago that the directive mentioned in the book is very similar to something the O-admin passed today. we may be able to utilize that.

anyway, even if this is just an exercise, what would the business cards say? What do you think, eitheror? i think you're right in that they'd have to have the link to the movie website on the back. in the front, there could be a variety of different things. the first thing that comes to mind is:

"Join me in the Gulch. - John Galt" followed by dollar sign.

Okay, I'm on this and will be back later with a comprehensive post. But in the meantime... IDEA:

Simple Cards. Front side whoisjohngalt.com. Back side: phone number

When someone calls the phone number, it will be galts speech. Is this possible? I think so. Audio book version of speech already exists. Can it be licensed?
Costs would be licensing the audio ($?)
            Renting the phone line ($monthly)
            Printing the cards ($cheap)

Upside: keeps the "curiosity factor". Whoever hands out the cards can say as much or as little as he/she wants.
Downside: has potential to seem a bit fanatical/ cultish. If person hands out card with a cryptic "this might interact you" and then caller hears speech.

Oops I meant *interest, not interact. Typing on phone. Fail.

lol I'm on my phone most of the time too. totally understand the strange auto corrects.

I was talking to my husband about the link you shared and possible marketing for the movie that we could do. he handles all marketing for our business and majored in it at college. anyway, he liked the business cards. his concern about the John Galt speech is the length and people hanging up after a few minutes. he mentioned a missing persons campaign for dagny run by hank Rearden. also, in the same way hunger games is doing viral marketing, the government in AS can promote their directive as if it were real. starting a twitter account for this would be easy and run the same way the Taggart, etc ones are run. the stuff they'd post would scare some people that may think it's real... hm, I wonder why the AS government doesn't have their own twitter account now that I think of it some more. I think the stuff they'd post would get more people rallying than the Rearden, Taggart and D'Anconia twitter accounts.

I look forward to your comprehensive post. coming up with these ideas is a lot of fun. never know, maybe some of them will be used.

"comprehensive post" just posted in movies category. Includes some images.

I like the ideas about the missing persons campaign, and the AS gov't. I feel like the Rearden, Jim, Francisco twitter accounts were a great idea, but they have been all over the place with references outside of the book and no general coherence. It's like the characters are living between the fictional world and ours, but need to pick one or merge better.

With the speech phone line I imagined it would be playing on constant repeat - kind of like the most awesome on-hold experience ever. That way, whenever someone calls in he or she will hear a different part of the speech. The point isn't really to hear the whole speech, just get people curious!

One of my favorite AR quotes is: "The truth is not for all men, but only for those who seek it"

It don't think of that quote as biblical, but I didn't think the other cards are either.

I like both cards, and the suggestions everyone has input. Gold dollar sign(s) are a must. A link to the movie rather than read the book is more likely to get people to act. Have you noticed lately that if you say 'read' and it's more than 160 characters people eyes glaze over?

Yes I have noticed that eyes glazing over...I've also noticed that my efforts to get people to watch the movie if they won't read the book have gotten glazed over. I'm disturbed by their lack of interest.
I love that AR quote too but I haven't used it because I think it could be taken as biblical to those who are clueless. No?
      All good ideas. :)

On one side you could have:
"If you're weary of a government that refuses to limit its power over you; if you're ready at this moment to claim the moral right to your own life"

Then on the other have the link to the gulch and/or movie website.

I like that....but... does it sound biblical at all?.... I'm trying really hard to stay away from any kind of a biblical feel. (I was told the last ones looked a little bible versey.... NOT the look I'm shooting for.)

I don't see how my suggestion is Biblical? Then again, my judgment is off today.

I don't see it that way either...and I didn't see it on the first ones until it was pointed that people MIGHT think it looks biblical... and it kind of did. We're so in the AS mind set around here we have a hard time looking at things absent that influence...people who see this may be very absent.... I want to suck them in...not make them eye roll. (I'm not saying yours was....I was asking...because my perception is coming from a place of 'knowing' already.)

Hi LS. I'm going to type some things, and they are a bit nit-picky, so take them as you'd like...

To the "biblical feel"-- this could be due to the font choice for the quote. It does look inviting, but a basic sans-serif might be better. I use Courier New on my business cards, it has a nice typewriter look but would take up more space.
-Since I'm talking about fonts, I would get rid of the Comic Sans (freedom quote on the back). Maybe make it the same font as whatever you choose for the front, but in italic or a different size.
-I like the very simple designs johnrobert and minniepuck suggested. Idk what site you are using to make them, but can overlay text and images? For example one large dollar sign in the middle like on v.1 of the cards, with whoisjohngalt.com overlayed in black. Other side would have quote on it.

I have tried the overlay on the dollar sign...either it's not an option or I can't figure it out.
I am going to toy around with johnrobert and minniepuck's ideas when I get time and thanks for the font input... I was looking at the other one tonight and was questioning the font myself lol... Thanks!
