An excellent summary of the whole sick system created by the elite class of Phd know nothings being allowed to run education.

"No longer" But you did until your conscience caught up with you? Better late than never I suppose. But they damage you condoned up until this point may never be repaired. You have failed in the sole responsibility given you by your chosen profession, no making amends to sooth your conscience.

Don't know the answer to the first question; it's related to the demands that certain social groups have that one call them by the "right" name, which only they know and use and if you're use the "wrong" label, nothing you say is valid. It's kinda like musical chairs, but with words. Just ignore it like the meaning-free noise it is.
The question I always have about standardized testing [ST] is that someone is going to use the results for something, and it has very little connection to the real world - MOST adults don't take them, & anyone who looks closely at them sees quickly that all they are is a snapshot of one specific moment. Further, some people are better at ST than others - I see a test as an opportunity to show off.
and the poor teachers! They did it to themselves of course, but if you're going to hold up a PhD in education as having meaning, you have to go by what the PhD says. And these days, They are saying "testing 'works'" & you oughta do it Even though it's irrelevant and horrible, you have to do it.
    Grrrrrr.
Free the children! Free the teachers!

The whole testing thing is just a racket, I believe it originally had some asis in trying to level out all the variation in teaching skills, students and locations. But it quickly ran away into a total cottage industry that has become the benchmark for all. You are right, most adults never see a test in their professional lives, I don't see Micky D testing for burger building and patty flapping. If some of the Phd had to take some of the off the wall tests, they might have to turn in the sheepskin....

I'm tested every day by my customers. It is not a "written" test, nor a "standardized" test, but it is a test of what value I bring to them. When that value is less than their costs, I always tell them first.

That is indeed the real test: can you function enough to meet your customers needs? Can you recognize value and provide it. Sadly a large number of business fail that test, and still expect you to pay for it.

They probably DID take the tests - a long, long time ago. But being a lawyer, for example, has a very different type of test, one that is given every time he walks into a courtroom - and it's not multiple choice, either. He's had weeks to prepare and ask questions, and some clerks to help him with the hard parts.
Who cares NOW how he did on his 5th grade test? More importantly, how did his high score help him to prepare to be a better lawyer?
You're right, it is a racket, and the strings are broken, the frame is bent and we need to get rid of it!
