"A popular US convenience store chain has been hit with a civil rights lawsuit accusing it of discriminating against minority job seekers because it requires applicants to have no criminal record.

On April 18, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced that it had filed a lawsuit against Sheetz Inc., accusing the 24/7 convenience store chain of having discriminatory hiring practices that targeted minority applicants.

According to the lawsuit, Sheetz has maintained a longstanding practice of screening all job applicants for records of criminal conviction and then denying them employment based on those records.

As a result, the EEOC is accusing Sheetz of “disproportionately screening out Black, Native American/Alaska Native and multiracial applicants.” This is despite the fact that the lawsuit does not allege that Sheetz’s hiring practices were motivated by race."

    OK, let me see if I understand this. The EEOC is effectively saying a convenient store chain can't refuse to hire an individual with a record of robbing convenient stores if the individual is a member of a protected minority? Uh-huh.

      Are they implying refused applicants with criminal records are mostly minorities?
      If so, doesn't a private company have the right to refuse criminals employment based on their criminal record? Minority or not?
      Further, are they saying a private individual must
      employ people with criminal records simply because they are minorities? That sounds racist to me.
      Felons are felons, regardless of race.
      If it happens that many felons are of minority status, so be it. You shouldn't be forced to employ persons of dubious character.

    Clown world writ large. ALL applicants are required to pass background check to obtain employment. NOT just minorities...ALL. Where is the violation of the civil rights of of any minority? That should put the EEOC action in the shitter. Well, in a sane world.

      No, the US is now supposed to be "outcome based" which means that if anything you are doing does not include exactly 13% of that particular ethnic persuasion then you are r+cist.

      For example, suppose we are investigating r+cism in the Massachusetts town of Phluggborough. there are five members of the Board of Selectmen. Exactly 13% must be of that ethnic group. The exact mathematical method for accomplishing such an amount is left to the school mathematics department, from which all students now get a grade of A because anything else would be d+scriminatory. Piece of cake.

      Oops, the Board of Selectmen is now called the Select Board because women cannot be included as men. Unless they underwent G+ender R+assignment.

    if ALL applicants are required to have no criminals records, how does this discriminate against minorities???

    it may discriminate against those with criminal records

    or is the EEOC saying that minorities are criminals?? that is the logical conclusion from their statement

      Do you know how easy it is to get a criminal record? In Texas just piss off a Judge and see. You can be innocent and get a Felony. Been there Done that! She didn't, however, get re-elected.

        they are saying ANYONE, regardless of skin color cannot have a criminal record

        that is hardly racist if it applies to EVERYONE

        it may be short-sighted
        it may be clueless
        it may be wrong

        but it is not racist it applied across the board

        BTW, in most if not all states after a certain amount of time with not issues, you can apply to have your record sealed and then say you have no criminal history.

    An Idiot Feds Step #2 comes to mind~~Making it racist for anyone to deny the sale of a gun to anyone of any race, color and creed with any kind of a criminal record.
    And at this point why bother to check for a criminal record or ask for a photo ID. Excluding anyone because of "white privilege" is no longer that much of a stretch either.

Filing charges against a business for not hiring someone with a criminal record. Try to get an apartment in Texas with a criminal record. Well perhaps you can in one of Wards in Houston but not the more affluent neighborhoods. nb
