In truth, with the nearly total lack of "real" security for those students...throwing canned food is better than nothing.
I'm not saying that armed teachers aren't a far better alternative, but if I was caught at home, unarmed, I'd probably pick up something to throw at an intruder too.
Of course, if I had a Pop Tart handy, I'd chew it into the shape of a gun and hold the intruder until police arrived...
Another new product/service/industry/opportunity, not to mention instructor-training courses and all kinds of new insurance policy riders.... :)

A few more things to ponder: Would we have demonstrations against police that used a food can against a criminal not having one of equal caliber? And would convenience stores be considered arms dealers? Would minors be allowed to buy canned food? I think we need to think this over, too many new regulations might have to go into effect. Would these regulations be enforced by ATF or the Department of Agriculture?
