Opinion Needed: Callused and heartless or interesting

I had an idea for either my current book or a future story that I'm told is calloused and potentially mean-spirited. I don't quite agree with the assessment so i'm hoping to run it by the Gulch to see what other level-headed people think.

Considering the headlines on genetic tinkering, what if things like dwarfism, downs, albino-ism, etc were all the result genetic tinkering in the distant past by a culture seeking immortality before they were destroyed? What if their work was unfinished when their end came and the gene defects were passed forward through what was left of humanity.

Mean-spirited? Calloused? Interesting?

If the book gets you interviewed on the radio or gets a review published, it might lead to more paid writing. Also, I think it's rare for someone's first book to be their biggest hit. If a later book is a hit, it drives sales to earlier books.

Any story can be a best seller, provided you have a good plot, can write in such a way as to generate feelings for your characters, and keep people guessing.

One of my favorite movies. "What About Bob."

At first you feel bad for Bob (Bill Murray), and hate the arrogant Doctor, (Richard Dreyfus).

By the end of the movie you end up feeling so bad for the guy you dislike, and just hope Bob would foll all a cliff, in the end you end up liking both characters with all their flaws. The writers did a great job of switching the antagonist and protagonist back and forth just through the situational interactions.

I would certainly give it a read..Just don't refuse to serve a wedding cake to a gay couple ... LOL

"if its not done correctly and people wave the political correctness flag against me"
The important thing is that they get the name and title right while they're waving the flag so excited or outraged people can go on Amazon and get a copy.

Would that mean, in this scenario, that prior to the tinkering there were no genetic anomalies? The scenario would lead you to tell what the predecessor species was like before the tinkering.

I don't think it's mean-spirited. If certain diseases were caused by human actions, it would just be a fact, not good-spirited or mean-spirited.

It's interesting. There are many directions you could go with this. It reminds me of Michael Crichton in Jurassic Park (paraphrasing) 'Just because you can doesn't mean you should.'

Interesting. I just finished a trilogy based on the concept of the 'Atlantis Gene' by AG Riddle which involved a similar concept, though not the dwarfism direction. From what I've read of your's to date, I think it could be very interesting.

Its just an idea in the hopper. That with a half dozen more could make a story.

I do grow concerned with this strand because if its not done correctly and people wave the political correctness flag against me I could pretty literally kiss any future interest people may have in my works good-bye. Even so, its a compelling idea that has potential.

No wonder you're an insomniacs. I need more info... off the cuff I think people are overly sensitive and morbidly afraid of offending someone...so I'm leaning towards interesting.
