While we're very happy to have you in the Gulch and appreciate your wanting to fully engage, some things in the Gulch (e.g. voting, links in comments) are a privilege, not a right. To get you up to speed as quickly as possible, we've provided two options for earning these privileges.
Liberals Lunatics:
STOP using paper bags they are bad for the environment, you are killing trees. HERE use these nifty petroleum based plastic bags instead.
Circa 2010:
Lunatic Liberals:
STOP using plastic bags they are bad for the environment, they do not degrade!!! HERE use these neat paper bags, they use renewable resources like trees...
This is the cycle of the DUMBASS liberals that we allow to run our lives by electing DUMBASS liberals to run our lives, which ironically is not liberal at all but more like controlling dictators...

I was bemoaning the fact that the ban was going to go statewide this year, when I did a search to fill in the date and found there is hope: instead of going into effect July 1, it is now on hold pending a referendum to repeal it.

Paper bags perfect for freezing fish in, better than newspaper. LOTS more uses for paper bags than plastic. Perfect for making love to that ugly girl or guy, can have a one or two bagger night lol. You can see through most plastic bags.
I despised plastic bags. They made baggers lazy, because you can pack 10x as much in a paper bag if packed properly.
Jan, had to reread the middle paragraph twice to make sure you really said that...
in the woodstove or hold "mixed paper" for recycle,
and the plastic ones hold groceries. . again. -- j
Similarly in the great AGW battle, while efforts are proposed to solve the 'problem' with government control and taxation (somehow taxes are always the solution), none of the proposed efforts would have significant affect on the outcome -- even if their theories were correct. The are just "a step in the right direction". Intentions over reality, of course.
They pride Germany on photo-voltaic electricity even though that actually results in more coal burning to keep an even flow of power than the nuclear they replaced. Once again causing greater damage to the environment but with good intentions.
And everyone knows what paves the road to hell.
I do like LED light bulbs, though.
My utility company provided generous rebates on LED bulbs a while ago and even gave some away, hoping to save enough consumption to avoid building a new power plant. So far they have succeeded, so....savings for them, savings for me. Works for me.
The major question, of course, is choice. For the moment, I am free to purchase any sort of light bulb I want. If I was REQUIRED to buy LED bulbs at many times the price of an incandescent or compact fluorescent, I would be very unhappy.

months of daily use -- about 14 hours per day.

Europeans figured out a far superior solution. They have two flush buttons, little and big. Probably legislated there too.
The new style government approved cans, are just about the dumbest thing I have ever seen. They take forever to fill with, are prone to break, and spill more gas than would ever be released by the fumes.
But of course, the feds know what is best for you!
BTW: Aftermarket kits are available to adapt these new cans to old style spout, but don't waste your time looking for a sensible gas can, You'll just be told "they don't make them anymore!" Couldn't help but think of Rand as I searched for one last week.
Nevertheless, I've gone through and replaced the incandescent (and the couple of flurecsents -- the ones that haven't self destructed yet) with leds because they do save electrical costs and I like the daylight color I can get.
Of course if we had a rational electric generation policy, electricity wouldn't cost as much but that's out of my personal control.
In the very long term, I believe, LEDs will simply compete on price as well, but that is slowed by the government removing one type of competition.
Now I have mostly LEDs, so I have several boxes of light bulbs and a failed plan.

In cost per mile over the life of the vehicles, including all cost, a Hummer is cheaper than a Prius -- that is, it conserves more resources.
Funny how liberals always say the opposite of what they mean. Their goals are REGRESSIVE. the wish to regress society back to kings, and knights and (other) war lords. We should always make the point to call them the proper thing (regressives, illiberals, anti-socialist, etc.)

remarkable what you will find when you read or reread what Ayn Rand wrote 50 or 60 years ago.

p.s. Rand was soooooooooo right.
that are not made in a totalitarian state. And that
has become increasingly difficult. I did find some
made in Hungary, but was dubious about that, Hun
gary having been previously a member of the
Soviet block. But I went to a neighbor's house
and he let me use the computer to look up the
latest information on it. It seemed to be accept-
able (who knows whether I'll find out that that
was wrong?), so I went to the store and bought
a slew of those packages. So that will last me
for a while.
(Note that I have no financial ties, this just happened to be from a quick Google search.)
