Feature Request - Block by ID

The flood of posts linking to things all over the web has become ridiculous.

Can we get a feature added to filter out and block threads by user name? This way we can avoid most of the deluge.

Even if it is limited to 3-5 ids lockable at once, that would do the job.

To clarify, I just want a block of threads by creator id. That is a workable way to hide the flood.

I agree, JBrenner. I don't own a television. Further, I don't know how many people have come here seeking knowledge of objectivism first...in my own particular case, I've read Atlas Shrugged several times, as well as The Fountainhead long before I decided to seek a website such as this and I suspect that many others here fit that profile. As has been pointed out, I like to look at a lot of these stories and see how it relates. Anything I'm not interested in, I simply gloss over. (I should add that I find censorship an outrage...but that's for another day.)

jb- I have long been in the same place. I LIKED having Objectivist- or freedom-flavored news presented to me.
It's different, and I haven't examined it closely enough to explain what I mean, but it's different.

I'm not fond of rules, [DUH], especially those that start "Thou shalt not..."

Do I have a solution? Well, not, not really. Avoiding the site and reading a good - or even a not-so-good book is the best I have so far.
    See ya.

I am in the same somewhat sterile spot. Scootch over a little, please? Someone's crowding me.

We actually already have this feature in queue. I'll see if I can get it bumped up on the priority list.

Good idea. At least it would be easier for me (us), then, to find the relevant posts.

But what about newcomers to the site? People coming here for Objectivist discussions, looking for like minded individuals or just to get a better view of what Objectivism is all about? And all they see are the same headlines, as RMP said, that they get in their email. Where, then, is the attraction to new Objectivists? I have enjoyed seeing some of the "less rational" comments get skewered and exposed by a proper application of Objectivism but more and more are here to spout and not to learn.
How about a new tab at the top between "hot" and "new" called "Relevant" or something, so posts can be voted on, by paying members only, to appear under that tab. Seems like the "Hot" tab was supposed to work that way but it doesn't.

I am probably the rare person who spends 20 minutes less per day on TV, radio, and newspapers because I can now get both Objectivist philosophy and a fairly condensed source of news in one location. The additional news items that a number of you think detract from the web site for you add something for me. This will always be a delicate balance for those who run the web site. Technocracy's suggestion of blocking by ID is probably the most workable solution for those who are distracted by the extra content.

I agree that it's conservative trolling and rarely is there anything relevant to Objectivism, Ayn Rand, or the AS movies. If there has been a philosophical or Objectivist type post it has been buried.

I think it makes more sense to emphasize to posters that this is a site for Objectivist, not statist, whether progressive liberals or conservatives. The site is going steeply downhill and being trolled out by ultra conservatives. I'm just losing interest. I haven't posted in about 2 weeks and I seldom comment anymore.

That's a great idea. The Gulch has been so flooded with the same news feeds that flood my email, I haven't spent any time here. It takes way to long to wade through.

I like this idea, as it would allow each of us to decide what we want to block. The reality is that I tend to only look at the posts on the first page, and if that first page is full of posts that don't interest me, then I am missing posts that do interest me. This feature has the potential to add a lot of value to the Gulch, and each individual would make his own choices.
