my first wife and I hauled 51 lambs back to knoxville
from the Marshalls of michigan farm west of detroit,
all gathered in the back of an 8-foot-bed chevrolet
pickup with a camper cover, in about 1977. . they
had to stand on their feet, the whole way. . when
we stopped moving, for gas or a restroom, one
opened the camper's rear window and fanned the
air in, for them, while the other did gas, etc. . the
marathon drive lasted about 10 hours.

they all survived and did well. . 4H kids loved them
    and showed them quite successfully.

but that pickup was like 250 alpacas on 3 acres. -- j

Indeed, the old man was a career criminal too. No credit so he bought the property on an owner contract and proceeded to destroy it. It took 3 years to get the state and county to finally admit killing off your animals is actually a bad thing. He is in jail now doing 3 years for criminal animal abuse, and that is only because he basically flipped them all off and just said "there was no problem". It was just a complete mess from one end to the other but made me committed to the fact the system is completely broke.

sounds like an infuriating situation! . that's a whole
lot of animals for 3 acres. . and the cost for legal action
    is also infuriating. . aaaaarrrrrrrggghhhh!!! -- j

Indeed, I have seen the same thing locally, as well as a 4 year running battle with the State Of Oregon ag dept, who allowed a moron next to me to gather 250 alpacas on 3 acres and never pick up any manure, by the end it was so bad they killed 80 or so from disease and starvation. I am still chasing him for the 138K judgement. Cost me as much to do it. They will kill off a small farm and then levy a pittance against a large one and never touch a corporate one for the exact same things.

Yes! . "Look at this shiny thing over here," while they
redefine pollution over there. . and then, your mom-and-pop
farm goes bankrupt from having to pay for water run-off
control from the land which has been natural for millennia. -- j

Once the tunnels to LA are finished they will all be sucked to oblivion. Where are the tree huggers when you really need them?

Glad I could use my sarcastic wit to entertain you Neal, you promted that train of thought with your last paragraph, and then I wandered into thinking how that would have made a good little snippit in AS, where Dagny and Reardon are fishing in that little remote area they went to, and then some camo dude skulks out of the grass and lays a whole boatload of fines on them, and confiscates their gear "for the good of the people" to protect some fish that Wesley Mouch may have sold to some cannery or something.

Your fishing comments gave me the smiles, then I got the giggles. I haven't giggled in about 50 years. Thanks!!! What I wrote is mostly true, at least about the passes, and I never even thought about any worm or bait taxes. I used to like to fly fish on the Bitterroot River that runs through Hamilton, Montana. I used to go there on business and of course I always took along my fly fishing gear in season. I never went out of season either.
