(Not to mention the asinine reductions of freedom imposed by most state governments for political correctness and to buy votes.)

You bring up some interesting points, MM. As I mentioned previously, you have to be careful with any "survey of freedom" to make sure that their definition of "freedom" matches what you want to be free to do.

Your tastes and mine, for instance, are very different. I would not miss the symphony nor the museum. My definition of freedom is more like: "the ability to go out on my back porch in my underwear and shoot my guns" (phrase borrowed from a friend). My wife is more social and likes to be in a neighborhood. So, for now at least, we are staying in the 'burbs (where we've been for 34 years).

VetteGuy's link was interesting. States do influence our lives. I personally look to cities for choices. The city is the engine of creation. You might be able to do whatever you want in North Dakota, but what actually can you do? You are not going to listen to a world class symphony orchestra, or tour a world class art museum. I would not expect to be openly gay everywhere in North Dakota, but in many cities within nominally "less free" states, it would not be a problem. Here in Austin, the local atheists have a bookstore and a TV show. Do you get that in North Dakota?
