Just done an experiment, there is a delay, kh is right again (boring), it is 15 mins or more, but you still have to refresh the page or open another page. I assume there is a delay when signing out as well but have not checked this.
Looking for your own name when signed on is like passing a mirror and checking to see if you are still alive, who can resist?

Gotcha, but I am using the same computer, and I was logged in, and it had been this way for a couple of weeks. Seems to be fixed now. I like knowing who is online with me, and wanted people to know when I was here. Thanks for your help.

If you don't log in, I think you show up as a lurker. Am I wrong? When I log in on a new computer for the first time, I show up as a lurker. I think that the web site looks for an IP address of the registered user.

You mean like clicking on a post? Would clicking on a comment work?
