"By the way, Iran is still shipping arms to terrorists
posted at 10:01 am on October 1, 2015 by Jazz Shaw

I know that we’re in a whole new era of cooperation with Iran and our crack negotiators are setting up treaties with them and such, but there are some nagging doubts which remain regarding the good will of our partners. A more suspicious person, for example, might have questions about some of their ocean shipping procedures. (Yahoo News)

A ship carrying illicit arms believed to be from Iran was intercepted last week by a member of a U.S.-backed naval coalition and was not registered with any country, the U.S. Navy said Wednesday.

The American description of the ship’s seizure in the northern Arabian Sea conflicted in some instances with an earlier account provided by a separate Saudi-led coalition battling Yemen’s Shiite rebels, which claimed it had foiled the smuggling attempt. The Saudi coalition alleged that Iran was using the vessel to ship arms to the rebels…

An American guided missile destroyer, the USS Forrest Sherman, arrived to assist once the weapons were found aboard the dhow, a type of vessel commonly used in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean.

There are a few points of interest tucked away in that story. First of all, our Navy is saying that the ship was “stateless” in that it wasn’t officially registered to any nation. But a cursory investigation revealed that it had left Iran and it was heading for Somalia, leaving little doubt as to what was going on here. Also, the “cargo” on this fishing vessel was more worrisome than some other smuggling operations which have been discovered in the past. For one example, we recently discovered a shipment of arms going to Libya which turned out to be carrying combat shotguns and massive amounts of ammunition. That’s worrisome to be sure, but gun smuggling into areas rife with conflict is nothing new.

This ship, however, was carrying dozens of anti-tank missiles, launchers and other high tech weapons of war. That’s several orders of magnitude above and beyond your garden variety rifles and handguns. The destination of the ship was a pretty obvious giveaway as well. If you’re sending gear like this to Somalia there’s really only two groups who could be the likely recipients. One are the Houthis, and it’s unlikely in the extreme that Iran would be helping them in such a fashion. That means the missiles were most likely destined for Al-Shabaab.

These are the people we’re doing business with? It’s not as if the fact that the ship was “stateless” has any impact on the conversation. I would hope that we don’t have anyone in the administration naive enough to believe that truckloads of anti-tank missiles are moving around Iran without the Supreme Leader’s people knowing about it.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that we’ve caught Iran with their hands in the cookie jar. Earlier this year another ship was captured heading for Somalia and that one had surface to air missiles and nearly 17,000 bricks of C4. That one also had some ambiguous paperwork but it was quickly identified has having set sail from Iran.

Iran is still a state sponsor of terror and not just in terms of lip service. They are providing terrorists with 21st century weapons of modern warfare when they might otherwise be fighting with pistols and swords. And the insulting aspect of these discoveries is that this latest ship was setting sail at the same time that Iran’s president was addressing the UN and lecturing us all about their good intentions and the need to accept them as serious members of the international community.

With friends like these we certainly don’t need any more enemies."

With leaders like these we need friends is my comment.

Neither can I. My viewpoint is that of a combat soldier of some 24 years experience. I am also a die hard relentless enemy of universal military conscription. I like your last sentence. For that a thumbs up and NO MORE CANNON FODDER!

Ah. Okay...you did list your source. (Sorry)
The original story was an AP story that has been reprinted, summarized...etc. Here is the original full article. http://popularmilitary.com/illicit-ar...
And as far as the history of Iran's nuclear program and an understanding of where Iran may be coming from, I suggest reading,
Nuclear Iran:The Birth Of An Atomic State by David Patrikarakos. It’s a fascinating read. The devil is in the details.
Regardless, I just can’t get worked up about the mess over in the Middle East. I agree with Ambassador Bolton who said this morning:
“The best thing President Obama can do for our foreign policy is to go to sleep the next sixteen months."

You didn’t list any sources for your story. Saudi-led coalition found the guns?
Do I have to point out the Saudis and the Iranians are in a power-struggle all their own?

For all we know, these guns were dropped by US-led coalitions in Syria. Maybe somebody (not an Iranian) is out there just trying to make a buck.
Or maybe you are right it is Iranians. I don’t know where you got this story.
Regardless, my attitude and position on Iran is much different then most around here. I am aware of that. There’s no reason to get testy.

If you look at the long history of our two countries you will see the Iranians wanted very much to be our ally after WW2, they adopted everything ‘western’. They were one of the first countries to come running to sign the NPT. Eisenhower practically encouraged them to be the lead country in that area.
They have been trying to get nuclear power under the NPT since the last years of the fifties. The Mullahs, who we are so afraid of, actually stopped the program after they took power. They may have wanted ‘Death to Americans’ but they didn’t want it to come about by any technological advancement that could be described as Western-influenced. There has been an internal political struggle within the country to stay on the path of modernity.
The Iranian people have know for decades that the best way to survive economically, would be to sell their oil and find alternative sources for energy for their own consumption. They only have a finite amount of oil, and their population is such that it could easily use up what they produce.
The light-water reactor in Bushehr became operational in 2013. Then quickly went off line for several months. Originally, that reactor was only going to supply 2% of the electricity that the country was going to need. Decades later....
We are friends with the Saudis because were aren’t friends with the Iranians. ?
I have never heard of an Iranian in Europe or the US trying to blow up anything.Foreign-born terroriss are usually Saudis.
Sixty years after it’s conception, the nuclear program has been an important part of Iran’s identity. They want to be recognized as a technologically advanced society. It’s their claim to modernity. It’s also their albatross. Their Nuke program has been extremely expensive, and at the end of the day--new technology is on the way. So... I dunno, there’s no reason for us to get in the middle of any of the Middle East' current problems.

One of President Obeyme's more interesting contradictions: Iran can have nukes to protect themselves, but American citizens can't have the right to protect themselves with a gun.

Wow that sounds suspiciously like TSA will make life all warm and fuzzy and solve all terrorist problems. if we just give peace a chance. Maybe but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

However if Iran can go ahead and sell it's weapons will their - and you said this not me - change their guilt as an instigator - and what you didn't say- as an enabler.

Can't have it both ways. Real life isn't a debate. There are no reset buttons.

If Iran can sell it’s oil and get back to the business of pursuing the technology to run their country on nuclear like they have tried for sixty years, they will have a legitimate way to keep their economy going. I think we will see a drawn down of their participation as an instigator as they move forward. I’m optimistic.
Israel doesn’t even get that a statement of:
“Israel won’t be around in twenty-five years” is a back-off from
    “Death to Israel now!”

Or we could just keep running ads with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the poster boy of evil, a man who hasn’t been the Iranian President for three years, a president who couldn’t get the Iranian public to vote for his choice of replacement.
