yes, it's racism, reverse racism like affirmative action, sanctioned by the politically "correct".... my life-long solution has always been the end run -- leave the PCers in my dust as I take an unexpected route to success. for the great many who are virtuous and kind, in this nation, I pray for a bloodless revolution. it IS possible. -- j

I think I "checked my privilege" when I decided to be a landlord. We rent to any who can afford and qualify for the required rent. Right now I am being schooled in the eviction laws and the new US Bankruptcy laws. The new chapter 7 protects the debtor from leases as well as loans and promissory notes. And, while under the veil of the court he can live free in my property, until the bankruptcy is discharged. Let's see, He was late a month when I filed for eviction, and on the last day before the hearing he filed his chapter 7. The attorney tells me those cases take about 4 months to be discharged. Add a couple of weeks to get a red tag and arrange a set out with the bailiff, and he's got 6 months. We have filed a motion to remove the stay on the eviction. It might save a couple of months. Or the judge may say no.

This is my first eviction. Education is always expensive, and when I'm done I will know how to avoid much of this.

In a few months I will again get to "check my privilege" at the front door of this property while I work to put it back together after this guy has had six months to trash the place. He has played a winning hand, because he knows more about the system than I. What he doesn't realize is he is playing that winning hand at the loser's table. When we are done, I will have a desirable property to sell or lease and he will only qualify for sub standard section 8 housing.

RonC I had to deal with my first bankruptcy during an eviction last year after doing them for over 35 years. You probably don't need to wait for the bankruptcy to be discharged. Find an attorney who specializes in bankruptcy law. He should be able to get a month to month rental agreement removed from the bankruptcy case (a lease might be more difficult) for $700 - $1,200. It should take 4 to 6 weeks, depending on court scheduling, etc. At least that was how my situation worked out.

Thanks for the heads up. Actually after my eviction lawyer got the notice of the stay, he referred me to a bankruptcy lawyer. We have a motion to lift the stay on the eviction. Unless the moocher pays his lawyer to object the motion and have a hearing, we should be able to proceed in about a month. This is my first rodeo, so I am getting the fullest education I can. we have already adopted 5 different management actions to avoid this in the future.

Judging by the idiocy that is taught in the Ivy League, and the damage Ivy League alums have done to our country exercising what they see as their right to run it, I don't think it's a priviledge to go to an Ivy league school. I think many of their graduates come out stupider than they when they went in, not to mention up to a quarter of a million dollars in debt. My kids will be able to go to these schools without borrowing money. I too am skeptical about their value. I went to a state school, so it's hard for me to know how much smarter I might be if I had gone to MIT or Cal Tech. My kids are only 5 and 3, but I hope they're already starting to get the skills to make intelligent decisions. We're planning to hand them around $120k apiece when they turn 18 to spend on education that they can complete without borrowing, a well-thought-out business plan that we approve, or a home. When that money's gone, there'll be no more money coming from us unless we die and haven't spent it or promised it to humanitarian causes. I hope that makes them think carefully and be mindful of things like the negative sell that people wanting your money do.

Right now they think it's funny to wrap themselves in toilet paper. If that doesn't change radically, of course, we won't just hand them that money to blow on spring break trips.

my kids did that too. They liked to make costumes. I got them scarves and hauled out the crib sheets. They also went nuts in my lingerie and pantyhose drawers. Luckily no one was ever choked to death. urban life is brutal. ;)

That is better than a degree in 13th Century fingerprinting with an emphasis in blue, but not much. It must be a degree for those who have difficulty getting a degree in Education. Who hires someone with a degree in literacy? One ends to be literate, not have a degree in it.
        Cheers.

she actually graduated in the top of her class in English at U of WI. Then she worked for teach america the appropriate 2 years and then to Harvard. These students are on a track to get the right "experience" and degrees from the right schools to fast-track them into govt positions.

Sounds like she'll soon line up a job with the government if she wants one. Literacy obviously well equips its graduates with all the skills necessary to run the world.

it's like they made up a program for fighting illiteracy in schools-predominately in urban and poor southern communities. It seems the systemic failures should be addressed another way instead of band-aiding the problem further on in school. I think the emphasis is on teen and adult literacy-coming up with compelling exercises and texts for an older individual who can't read-but I'm not sure.

This is just simple the poisoning the well, a form of ad hominem.
It's supposed to sound sophisticated or something, but it's an age-old logical fallacy. The only response really needed is "argument ad hominem."

I just recently checked my "white male privilege"
and was not too impressed. Last year I had to go to the emergency department for treatment and I had no health insurance. It cost me $800 cash. I recently got health insurance and had to go to the ED for the exact same thing, guess what I had to pay out of pocket. Eight Hundred US dollars. I have one of the best health insurance policies money can buy from BC/BS. How is it that non-white people do not have to pay anything ? Who has privilege ?

Typical of the Ivy League elitist's. One is there ONLY as a privilege, in their professorial minds. And some are more privileged than other based NOT ON MERIT, but on ones socio-economic and political affiliations.

The term could be turned into a pejorative against those who received a privilege without merit by saying " Check your merit to question mine."

I have checked my privilege and my merit, and I too, apologize for nothing.
    Thanks for posting KH
    Cheers

I have tried my best to be what I can be. Not what they want, but what I can be. Regulated beyond belief yet I'm still here. Made some friends and certainly some enemies. I found that answer not on my own just by listening, reading, studying and a lot of prayer. Still at times I struggle because of not understanding early in life. Being on the Gulch will suffice. No apologies from this end.

"I apologize for nothing" is a statement of reassurance and healthy pride. We all know quite well that we´ve got many things to be sorry for, because no one is perfect. This could be read along the lines of "the end justifies the means", but I consider it more a phrase for the damned than a phrase for the proud. If one respects their own codes or principles, those apologies are mearly formal and no more than skin deep. If one changes principles according to the circumstances then, well those people cannot even trust themselves...

Kudos to Fortgang for a logical response. Unfortuntely, though much of what he said is quote worthy, it will go unrepeated and the ingraining of bias will continue. Merit is no longer a measure used with today's students.
