I would suggest in addition to typesetting a writer should learn to use the modern tools of the craft..
I frequently use Nuance's Dragon speech recognition tool, especially if I'm writing a long piece. As some of you know from previous posts, I'm visually impaired and cannot always see the keyboard clearly or the computer screen.
As for the pencil and paper for jotting notes, I suggest the voice record more for the cell phone, a tape recorder or the video recorder on the cell phone. Record the facts as you perceive them, then give you opinion of what they mean. And above all, Don't rush to judgement, especially if you are reporting the observations and adding factual content. As Joe Friday said: "Just the Facts."
