Why him? He was the only American Military prisoner they had, there was no other choice to trade for, to try to make things look good in light of the debacle of the VA.

    You are wrong.

There is no automatic promotion for time served, EXCEPT for those that are confirmed POW's.

Every one else has to pass the tests, and get the recommendations.

Proof of this is that Bergdahl has NOT been given his next scheduled promotion, while his actual past 5 years are being investigated.

I keep wondering why him? Why give up these guys for him? Couldn't they come up with a better reason to release these guys?

He was specifically not categorized as a POW. AWOL, deserter, or traitor is yet to be determined.
But it seems indisputable that he left his outpost without authorization and without protective equipment. That does not seem to be the actions of a soldier out for an afternoon stroll.

The reason Bergdahl got promoted is because official Army policy specifically states that upon their return, POWs automatically get promoted to whatever their rank would have been according to their time in grade had they not been captured.

I'm not taking any stance on the Bergdahl case, as the whole thing just seems like a huge mess, but people should be aware that Bergdahl's promotion was a standard procedure, and not some special honor.

Obama will take every opportunity to denigrate honorable military service. Its all part of his larger plan to punish Americans for their accomplishments. Thanks for your service.
