That's a bit of a skewed description. The Constitution, as written, did not specify or restrict who could or could not vote. Later, only white men holding property or otherwise paying taxes were eligible to vote (unclear to me where/when this transition happened), but the key was paying taxes. The producers enjoyed the benefits of voting; the moochers did not. In practice, those were mostly landowners, but that is because the society was agrarian. An amendment to allow ex-slaves to vote gave full citizenship to citizens, but again it was dependent on the person being a producer. Regarding women’s right to vote, which was denied at the time, one must keep it in context of the times – the overwhelming households were families that had a husband and a wife (amazing that this concept needs to be expounded on today); if a unity of opinion cannot be reached within a family so as to vote as one, then that family should not be qualified to vote in the first place.

Exactly! This is exactly why this administration is so wrong. In order for there to be true prosperity there must be failure. We now stack all failures on the backs of the successful. The weight is becoming to heavy.

It is an axiom that the "masses" are less intelligent than the "better" members of a society. The US Constitution recognized this fact and restricted voting to those members of the society that were demonstrably productive. Once the voting was opened up to all, on an equal basis, it became simply a matter of time for the stupidy of the masses to take over the government (or for the governing few to pander to the masses; the result is the same). So, collectively, we lowered our standards, our expectations and dived into the abyss. Whether a realative few are intelligent is irrelevant, as the mass of the country is devolving.

I have to respectfully disagree. Those of us that are paying attention do not get what we deserve. We are forced into this mess by those that are not paying attention. But I would agree, those not paying attention and those voting intentionally for this get what they deserve. :)
