    Actually, in the philosophy of self-esteem per PhDs in education, this is what it is designed for, which is to give kids something to live for since neither God, nor just good ole hard work is relegated continually until it is the doormat of mediocrity.

    Interesting....they don't care if kids with self-esteem keep it...they just want those without it to take it from those with it.

    If they change things around to where they strip this kid of what he earned (much like the government does to us today), I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years he is doing drugs, and committing suicide on Youtube/FB.

    Such will be called a tragedy and no one will understanding what happened; meanwhile the kids who "benefited" from the rule change will continue meandering through their self-pity while continuing to be given all that is earned on their behalf.

    Your original post read like it didn't matter if the contest was rigged. A comma after "2nd place", and the following "and" changed to "or" would have made it clearer. Without the comma, and "or", it reads like the smart kid wins, and then gives up the award.

    Your scenario will happen for some kids. I also think the reverse could happen.

    The one who "benefitted" from politics could end up like Peter Keating who benefited from Ellsworth Toohey.

    They couldn't really "strip [Roark] of what he earned" because he wasn't trying to earn adulation from Toohey or a ribbon from the Dean. .

    flanap is correct. I'm saying "Who are they fooling?" The other kid, if he's reasonably intelligent, will get only the pride of being second place regardless of whether this award reads 1st or 2nd place.

    I don't think cgervasi is making a case for him stepping down....he is just making an observation; therefore, that is why he said intelligent observers see what is happening and can conclude.

    This is pathetic. I have never understood the thought process behind something like this. How can people really think that is the answer to the problem?

    I know even this is a bad idea but it wouldn't be so bad if maybe everyone got one entry for every book they read. Then at least his chances of winning would increase proportional to how much he read. However even this I think is wrong and this kid should be proud of his hard work and rewarded accordingly.

    If you 'won' that way. how much pride would you feel for your victory...and what 'value' would it have.

    We must try to kill success, ambition and achievement at as early an age as possible. This must be done in the name of fairness. All must be mediocre.

    His next book to read should be Anthem. The librarians will have to read it to be able to ask the questions.
