"What is clearly needed and clearly lacking in the Muslim Middle East are strong voices for Enlightenment, modernist values: a respect for human reason as opposed to blind faith; individual liberty and autonomy; free markets; and honest governments limited to protecting life, liberty, and property."

The funny thing is that the middle east (the cradle of civilization) was once upon a time a great source of knowledge, wisdom and forward thinking in the world. In the time of belief in Zoroaster (around 600-550 B.C.) there was much more civility and wisdom... Although it is still mysticism it was much more tolerant than the pervasive beliefs of today's middle east extremists and in many ways more enlightened.

Just read a great line in "The Frankenstein Candidate" by Vinay Kolhatkar, a gulch member,
"It is a strong and safe America that will be a beacon of hope and freedom around the World."
It provokes. When we follow our values, defined in the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights, then we are strong and safe. When we place safety above our values, we get neither safety or strength. (borrowing a little there from Ben F)
so far, the novel is excellent. I can't put it down.
