Are things really that bad? Will they ever change for the good? Will the greed overcome the progress?

While we're very happy to have you in the Gulch and appreciate your wanting to fully engage, some things in the Gulch (e.g. voting, links in comments) are a privilege, not a right. To get you up to speed as quickly as possible, we've provided two options for earning these privileges.
Peace and prosperity,
O.A.
When whale oil lighted our homes and we had just about caused the whales extinction, man found and developed Oil. One could argue that Rockefeller saved the whales. Something always comes along. One cannot predict the future, or what medium of exchange will be used. Past is prologue. It is reasonable to expect that there will continue to be variables among differing societies. Some will be more accepting/ tolerant than others. Our own evolution is unpredictable. I believe we are wired for survival. Each of us is our own supreme being. There is no empirical evidence to suggest alternatives. There will never be complete harmony among people. The variability of humanity and their disparate expectations will conflict. Of course this is subjective and depends upon your expectation and level of harmony. Harmony is within your own power and your state of mind. Surround yourself with like minded people who wish to co-exist peacefully, and that is where you will find it.
Respectfully,
O.A.
I sure hope to see some elaboration.
