A lot is going on in this story. Feds are impeding this mans ability to produce. They are trampling on states rights. All this to save a tortoise.

They could really make this a states rights issue and take control of the situation. That would take guts.

    "Bring guns" said Rearden.
    And they did.
Time to reinstate and expand the restrictions on military and on federal police in Posse Comitatus.

Surreal really. Our government used to care about debt and did sell land... now they sell us and our posterity into servitude. :(

Good point OA. No need for the Feds to own land. In the case of Nevada I read that they control 81% of the land. If your the Feds you don't have to own it. Agencies can regulate it which is almost worse.

The Federal government should be selling land to pay its debt not taking more. This is disgraceful. How these bureaucrats and agents can call themselves Americans and sleep at night is incomprehensible.

According to a search I just did the Feds claim to control 81% of the land in Nevada. Hey Harry Reid...Are you okay with that?

    Revolting!

I've seen cows eat a lot of weird things, but tortoises aren't among them. BLM also rounds out all the wild horses, even runs the hooves off the babies when they're chased by helicopters (which is illegal but they try to prevent anyone from seeing or filming) and breaks up the bands. The horses are housed in holding pens at a huge cost to the tax payers.

This is just another part of the huge land grab, keep the people out campaign.

The other story here is that he is the last one left. the others left voluntarily. The Feds just took control of the land. Property ownership has been one of the freedoms we all depend on. If they can do this in Nevada no place is safe.

From what I can tell the other ranchers moved out rather than pay the fee. He is the last one left. Its the Feds that moved on him and the state agencies claim to be powerless to help.

Its a shame there aren't any groups standing with the rancher. I was worried this might be another Ruby Ridge. Sounds like they went in with overwhelming force.

The story goes a little deeper. Feds had pretty much left him alone since sometime in 90's (?). Then an environmental group threatened a sue and settle, their MO for several years, so the Fed's decided to act. Stories are that they even have sniper teams deployed, have set up free speech and media areas far from the ranch.

    It's gruesome.

    Link worked fine for me.

Environmentalist groups are pleased with the decision to move in on this guy. I don't know how any American can support this action.

BLM = Fed, US Forest Service involved as well. EPA involved initially to designate the area as necessary to the turtle/tortoise. Rancher tried to pay his grazing fees to the State and/or County. Very few ranchers left.

The vast majority of Nevada is Federal controlled/owned.

BLM falls under federal or state jurisdiction? I'm confused. Is the EPA involved as well? Are other ranchers paying a grazing fee and if so how does this lessen risk for the tortise? None of this makes sense. Why does it cost the BLM 3 million to hold 900 head of cattle?? The whole thing is upside down and I am surprised the governor is silent on this.

It worked! What a travesty!!! This cannot continue to happen! Blm is so full of corrupt people that it must be under union governance, or mafia. The EPA is lauding the measures being taken against this man and his family?!? It's truly appalling and the governor of Nevada needs to step in with the state's national guard to protect these people. A frickin tortoise is reason for this!!! It's bull$hit.

The EPA is out of control. They are behind this bs, and they need to go down in flames. Damn you, Nixon!!
I find this to be incredibly alarming, because it isn't happening just to this man, but people all over the country, sometimes cloaked in eminent domain, other times because some creature is "threatened". The actual living things in danger are the people who are just living their lives, who suddenly find themselves the victims of a voracious and power drunk administration.
