Government run amuck, yet they continue to structure school around tests, never teaching how to learn....

While we're very happy to have you in the Gulch and appreciate your wanting to fully engage, some things in the Gulch (e.g. voting, links in comments) are a privilege, not a right. To get you up to speed as quickly as possible, we've provided two options for earning these privileges.
education of children can, and will, and does, and
must, eventually lead to government thought con-
trol. So "holding children hostage" doesn't really
come as much of a surprise to me.
How many of these parents support government schools?
How many of these parents are able to connect the dots and see the big picture?
I sympathize with the kids, but not with most of the parents. They're getting what they voted for.
I didn't learn much (thank goodness for books), because the teachers didn't give a damn. They were just killing time for a paycheck. Oh, but the most amusing thing was when one ventured to say, "We're here to teach you how to think". It took a Herculean effort not to laugh. Public school education is regurgitative. Memorize, then repeat back when called upon to do so. If the teachers even bothered to do that. I graduated with three people who couldn't read.
I will say one thing in its favor. Graduating from a public school in the ghetto leaves you with terrific survival skills. If you can manage to graduate without being beaten, stabbed, shot or raped, you've learned all they can teach you.
All in all, you're just a fascist control freak.
Those who feel that home-schooling might leave the student at a disadvantage could benefit by reading this list:
